As the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars raced into Sauk Rapids, Minnesota’s famed Granite City Motor Park, one hometown driver would come out on top. Starting inside the top five of Saturday night’s 35 Lap GMC Select Dealers of Minnesota feature race would not stop Big Game Motorsports very own David Gravel from earning the victory at his home track.
Following the wave of the green flag Sprint car veteran Donny Schatz would lead the way. Attempting to hold off outside pole sitter Aaron Reutzel for the first 14 laps, Schatz would lose his top spot after the only caution flag of the race flew for a turn one pileup involving top-ten runners Carson Macedo, James McFadden, and Dominic Scelzi.
A rough restart on the outside for Schatz sent his Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing No. 15 falling to fourth as Gravel and seventh-starting Haudenschild found their power and began to make a charge for the lead. After racing his way around Reutzel’s Roth Motorsports No. 83 Gravel took to the lead short-lived as Haudenschild slapped the right rear of his NOS Energy Drink No. 17 off the fence and drove around them both to lead Lap 16 by a mere 0.011 seconds. By the next lap Gravel raced his way back to the lead and never looked back, even through lapped traffic, to race to his fifth win of the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series season, and the 63rd of his career.
“This was an amazing win,” said Gravel. “My team gave me a great car I could run both lanes, and that ended up being big. To win on a slick track like this and pass talented drivers like Schatz also feels pretty good.”
Along with a hometown win, Gravel also raced his way into the second spot behind Brad Sweet as the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series will make its first stop of the 2021 season at Iowa’s Knoxville Raceway on Friday and Saturday, June 11-12th.
