Carson Hocevar’s First Win Made Everyone Happy

Carson Hocevar's First Win Made Everyone Happy

Hocevar emerges from the chaos to win at Talladega, with a celebration that will go down in NASCAR history.

Talladega was, as always, unpredictable. In fact, that unpredictability is just about the only thing you can count on when it comes to superspeedway racing. Ever since the dawn of the restrictor plate, high speeds and tight pack racing were the norm – even after the switch to computer-controlled fuel injection. This close quarters combat often leads to “The Big One,” a popular name for a huge wreck that takes out many cars that could have otherwise contended for the win.

That massive, 26-car wreck on lap 116 brought out a red flag for an extended cleanup. It wasn’t quite the biggest ‘Dega wreck in history, but it came close – the fall 2024 playoff race at NASCAR’s longest superspeedway involved 28 cars, in case you were wondering. However, the big story of the day was that the unpredictable nature of modern plate racing made another one of our 2025 predictions come true.

Like Ty Gibbs two weeks ago, Carson Hocevar won his first NASCAR Cup Series race on Sunday. It wasn’t easy – the final caution on lap 182 nearly took him out of contention like many others. Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. made contact with Hocevar, which sent him into Erik Jones – and sent Jones spinning.

Miraculously, Hocevar was able to rally to a win, and he celebrated in legendary fashion, hanging out of his car, waving at fans, and even attempting to catch a few beers thrown his way before (intentionally) smacking a wall and doing a legendary burnout. Some are comparing the celebration with the late, great Alan Kulwicki‘s legendary Polish victory lap.

It’s just the kind of feel-good story NASCAR needed right now, propelling it back into the national consciousness once again. Highlights of Hocevar’s victory celebration have been trending on every social media platform, reaching an audience far outside of the NASCAR fandom. Hocevar’s aggressive style has earned him some criticism in the past, but it truly seems that the entire NASCAR community is rallying behind their new young star. Here’s to many more, Carson.
