Carroll Shelby Foundation Debuts International Auto Tech Scholarship Program in South Africa
The Carroll Shelby Foundation announced a new international scholarship initiative, committing $25,000 annually over the next five years to the Kliptown Youth Program in South Africa. The $125,000 commitment supported automotive technology scholarships for underserved youth pursuing careers in the automotive industry.
Through the program, students selected by KYP attended automotive training at Next Level Skills Academy, marking the Carroll Shelby Foundation’s first international scholarship effort. The initiative aimed to address the global shortage of qualified auto technicians while creating sustainable career pathways.
Founded in 1992 by legendary racer and automaker Carroll Shelby, the Foundation has long focused on medical aid and educational opportunities, later expanding into hands-on automotive training programs.
“Carroll Shelby believed in giving young people the skills to build meaningful futures in the auto industry,” said Neil Cummings, co-President of the Carroll Shelby Foundation and co-CEO of Carroll Shelby International. “This program created a direct pathway to technical training and employment.”
Located in Kliptown, southwest of Johannesburg, KYP serves a community where many young people face limited opportunities after completing school.
“We were grateful to partner with the Carroll Shelby Foundation to provide access to high-quality automotive training and in-demand skills,” said Thulani Madondo, Executive Director of the Kliptown Youth Program.
KYP selected Next Level Skills Academy for its advanced facilities and training programs focused on ICE and diesel-powered vehicle repair. Scholarship funding covered tuition, tools, certification, transportation, and job-readiness support.
The annual donation funded three students per year, with up to 15 students expected to become certified auto technicians over the five-year commitment.
