Bruce Springsteen’s ‘57 Chevy Is Being Auctioned

Yes, you read that heading correctly. (The Boss) Bruce Springsteen’s yellow 1957 Chevrolet Bel-Air Convertible is rolling down the auction block once again. Talk about a sweet example of Rock n’ Roll memorabilia. Hit songs like “Born to Run,” “Backstreets” and “Thunder Road” were reportedly inspired by the car. That earned the famed hot rod a spot at several different Rock n’ Roll halls throughout the past decade. If only the ‘57 could cost today what it reportedly cost the famous singer when he bought it ($2000)! Life would be grand, wouldn’t it? The iconic Chevrolet is being sold with the original vehicle registration, authenticated, autographed, and ready for your stocking stuffer. That’s if you’ve got the scratch, because this yellow ‘57 with orange flames won’t be sold cheap. Last time the car was being auctioned (2011), it fetched just a skosh over $460,000. That just so happens to be about $460,000 more than I’ve got in my bank account. Damn…

His first set of wheels …

Reflecting back on his first car, Springsteen wrote:

“In ’70s New Jersey, the car was still a powerful image. That summer I bought my first set of wheels for $2,000. It was a ‘57 Chevy with dual, four-barrel carbs, a Hurst on the floor and orange flames spread across the hood.”

It’s difficult to relate to why the Boss sold his first set of wheels. Apparently, the vintage Chevrolet was just too noticeable once fame came pounding at Springsteen’s door. I guess that’s what happens, huh? Write some smash hits, top the Billboard charts, record hit record after hit record. I’d be lying if I said the first song I fell in love with by Bruce Springsteen, “ I’m on Fire,” isn’t on my playlist. That makes me wonder if the Boss may ever decide it’s time to buy back his old ‘57 Chevy.
