A very special holiday is upon us, and three NHRA drivers have a great reason to celebrate. In our latest edition of Behind The Wheel podcast, we caught up with the two young drivers who proved that nothing could stop them from earning their first ever NHRA world championship in 2018.
For those who followed this season closely, you know that one division was a wrap shortly after the Countdown to the Championship began. While no other Top Fuel drivers were able to catch Torrence Racing’s own Texan marauder Steve Torrence, who earned the 2018 Top Fuel world championship prior to the Auto Club NHRA finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, the Funny Car and Pro Stock divisions were still up for grabs.
Tune in below to let Kalitta Motorsports’ newest Funny Car world champion, J.R. Todd, tell you how he was able to take down 2017 Funny Car world champion Robert Hight to finally obtain the one thing for which he has worked 26 years.
Todd wasn’t the only NHRA young gun to earn his first championship. That’s right, you guessed it : We also caught up to the 2018 NHRA Pro Stock champion Tanner Gray. Gray may have come up short last season, but after making his decision to move on to NASCAR in 2019, the Gray Motorsports racing phenom found his way to the top of the Pro Stock ladder.
Let this 19-year-old hotshot tell you how he was able to pull off this amazing feat as well as what his bright future in racing is going to look like.
