conducts his racing business with a lot of thought, never one to jump into situations that might not benefit those that back his play. As a driver, Detroit-raised Buhl had a solid career, particularly in the Indy Lights arena, earning three victories and a good number of podium results from 1990-1996 despite only competing full-time in his first season. He was the 1989 Barber Saab Pro Series titleholder and 1992 Indy Lights champion.
Buhl also drove in CART and Indy Racing League competition, compiling a couple of victories in IRL along with seven podium results over 78 total races. After hanging up his helmet, Buhl worked in broadcasting with Versus on IRL competitions, and then put together his own Red Bull Global Rallycross team, helping newer drivers in a rallycross junior series gain success in the field.
Now Robbie Buhl has taken on the role of INDYCAR team co-owner, and anyone that knows him realizes he’s taken the time to research well his partnerships and to enter into this endeavor with the kind of care and class he’s always epitomized.
Citrone/Buhl Autosport intends to make its debut during the month of May at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where the GMR Grand Prix and, hopefully the 104th Indianapolis 500 are on the docket. Buhl, brother Tom and his business partner, Robert Citrone (together with his son Nick), the founder of Discovery Capital Management and the latest minority owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers are a definite for the road race and a possible entry for the 500.
Buhl and his brother Tom are partners with Citrone, whose son Nick is also a partner in the endeavor. Nick Cintrone is a data analytics coordinator for the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Buhl brothers own Buhl Sport Detroit, a motorsports marketing company that has operated the rallycross team, Racing4Detroit. The duo also offers an advanced driver training program called Teen Street Skills.
Robert Citrone and Robbie Buhl have been friends since meeting at the Indy 500 20 years ago, at a time when Buhl was a regular competitor in Indy car racing. Both the Citrone and Buhl families share of love of Indy car racing and have wanted to form a team to compete at The Brickyard.
The quartet began to plan their NTT IndyCar Series team in the summer of 2019, exploring opportunities with several teams and drivers to enter a car in this year’s 500-mile race. Their intent is to partner with the right people to deliver results, they said.
Buhl believes that in 2020 “the time is right” for him and his newly formed team to get into the NTT IndyCar Series. They will not be buying out their own equipment but intend to partner with an existing team. That information, together with the identity of a driver should be forthcoming within the next week or two, with confirmation likely by the end of the month.
