The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series kicked off their opening weekend in an interesting fashion at Volusia Speedway Park. After three nights of racing and one wild hunt, Logan Schuchart would drive away with a golden gator in Sunday’s NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series finale at the DIRTcar Nationals presented by Bozard Ford.

After starting his weekend with both a second place and fifth place finish and starting second for Sunday’s 30 Lap finale race, Schuchart put an assault on the 27-car field in front of a packed house. Following a second-place start in Sunday’s finale, the Hanover, PA driver powered his way underneath Daryn Pittman on Lap 2 to take the race lead.

Despite lapped traffic continuously hindering his pace, Schuchart continued to dominate almost all of the remaining 29 Laps, with pole sitter Pittman chasing his tail. With 10 laps to go, Schuchart got caught behind a slower car coming off Turn 2, allowing Pittman to close within a car length’s distance.

While it appeared as though Pittman would regain the race lead, once Schuchart found his way back into clean air he would hold his position until the last two laps. The No. 26 of Corey Eliason attempted to charge to the lead after sneaking past the outside of Pittman for second and setting his sights on Schuchart. While Eliason would succeed in powering his way around Schuchart off Turn 2 on Lap 28, Schuchart threw a hold-your-breath slide job on Eliason through Turns 3 and 4 to reclaim the lead on the final lap for his first DIRTcar Nationals win.

“I really wanted to win that Golden Gator and this track is so tough,” said Schuchart, who had never finished inside the top-five and never led a lap at the half-mile speedway. “After so many challenges here to pull away with a win really helps our confidence going into the 2020 season.”

The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series will get back to racing during the Texas Shootout weekend March 13th through 14th. Stay tuned to RacingJunk.com for all of your dirt racing coverage.
