Congratulations are in order as we recognize the accomplishments of a truly exceptional driver. Seven-time NHRA national event winner Alexis DeJoria is joining three other inductees enshrined in the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame this week.
Regarded as one of the most accomplished and influential female athletes in motorsports, DeJoria has continually broken barriers in an industry that is still largely male-dominated thanks to racking up some pretty impressive achievements, including winning a national event within eight months of her debut in a Super Comp dragster. After working her way through the NHRA Sportsman classes and eventually into the Top Alcohol Funny Car category, DeJoria also became one of the first women to own and operate her own race team, Stealth Motorsports. During this time, DeJoria raced to four national event final rounds, won a divisional event and claimed the 2011 NHRA Northwest Nationals Top Alcohol Funny Car crown.
After deciding to make the leap to Funny Car, DeJoria joined Kalitta Motorsports, where she earned five event wins, including the prestigious 60th annual NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, reset multiple track records, was a No. 1 qualifier four times and became the first woman to clock a sub-four-second Funny Car elapsed time. She was also the first woman to compete in 100 Funny Car events.
In addition to her on-track achievements, DeJoria is highly regarded for her humanitarian efforts, most notably the ‘Free Mammograms for the Fans’ program that has provided over 500 mammograms at racetracks throughout the country.
Although DeJoria decided to hang up her helmet from racing two years ago, she will return to full-time Funny Car competition in 2020.
Joining DeJoria in her Hall of Fame induction were NFL star Glen Carano and the late Ralph ‘Babe’ Serpico. DeJoria also shared the stage with auto racing legend Mario Andretti as he was presented with The Hall’s first Lifetime Achievement Award.
Congratulations go out to DeJoria, and we look forward to seeing her back on the track in the upcoming season!
