Getting to Maple Grove Raceway in Mohnton, Penn. isn’t an easy trek, but it sure can be a fun one. The back roads to this semi-isolated race track, born as a 1/5-mile dragstrip in 1962 and a national event member of the NHRA family since 1985, are race-inspiring as they wend through this lush countryside. Maple Grove, near Reading, is known for its blistering speeds, national records and homey atmosphere.
Now it’s for sale – all 450 acres, including the racing business and 14 parcels of land – for a listing price of $8 million. The sale includes two liquor licenses (not easy to attain in the state), campground facilities, a good deal of paid parking, several residential rentals, its office and event buildings and the equipment used for drag racing and car shows as well as concerts and other events held at the venue.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, June 5, the track said there just weren’t enough answers to the question of why they’re selling, but maintaining and running a vast facility of this nature can be more than a full-time job. The track has been owned and run by the Stauffer family since its inception in 1962.
“Above all, the original families of founder Alfred Stauffer have decided to pursue other personal interests,” the track stated in revealing the intended sale. “Running a world-famous facility and maintaining approximately 450 acres is not an easy venture. The families are seeking new owners for Maple Grove Raceway now because they want to see the track continue and advance to the next level.”
“It’s not hard times or anything like that,” noted Sarah Gingrich, track director of communications, speaking to the Reading Eagle. “The family is aging. The parents that owned it passed it down to their kids and then their kids, but it wasn’t in the cards for them. Running a race track is not easy.”
This news follows, by little more than a year, the demolition of the drag racing facilities at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ, leaving the Reading-adjacent facility as the sole tri-state (NJ, NY, PA) NHRA national event track operating.
The Berks County facility, while known for its quick times and speeds, has had its national event dates massaged several times, usually coming after an exceptionally wet visit. This year the Dodge NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway are scheduled for September 12-15 and begin NHRA’s six-race Countdown to the Championship playoffs.
