Former World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series Champions Brandon Sheppard and Darrell Lanigan put on what could potentially be remembered as one of the most exciting races of the 2019 season on Saturday night at Wayne County Speedway.

After starting second and third for the 50-Lap feature, two of the most popular Series drivers began to put on an incredible display of lap-after-lap, no-holds-barred Battlerama for the first 25 laps. The two fought for the lead, but it was Lanigan who would hold it until the driver known as the Rocket and his Rocket1 racing team begin digging on Lanigan down low, until they saw daylight on the high side.

Although it took until the final four laps for Sheppard to get by race dominator Lanigan, finding a way to race to a great run coming out of turn two on Lap 46 gave him a chance to drag race down the backstretch and reach lapped traffic that ultimately slowed Lanigan and gave Sheppard’s No. 1 machine the advantage it needed to edge its way to the lead, as well as the eventual race win.

“This was definitely a hard-fought win,” said Sheppard. “I knew my car was fast on the top, so if I could just get in open track, I could roll pretty good. When I moved to the top of turns three and four and caught Lanigan, I knew that we had a shot at taking the lead if we could just catch up to lapped traffic, and this gave me the perfect opportunity to see what we could do at the bottom. After feeling the heat, I knew that I had to go for it and this risk paid off for yet another win for both me and my Rocket1Racing team.”

With this win, Sheppard has now tied fellow Series Champion Billy Moyer for third on the all-time World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series Feature wins list at 44. It also marks his third-straight victory at the Wayne County Speedway in World of Outlaws competition – an unprecedented accomplishment at the Orrville facility.

“It’s fitting for me, I don’t know why,” Sheppard said. “It just reminds me of a track back home in the Midwest.”

Although Sheppard and his fellow World of Outlaws competitors were scheduled to run a second feature race on Sunday at Muskingum County Speedway in Muskingum County, Ohio, Mother Nature was once again declared a winner this season due to extremely wet conditions and continued impending showers in the area. Next on the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series Schedule is a trip back to the Southeast for two races, brand-new to the Outlaws – Cochran Motor Speedway on May 31 and Lancaster Speedway on June 1.
