Pinup Pole Show Pinup of the Week: Tonya Kay with a 1965 Buick Riviera

Last week I took my 1965 Buick Riviera, the Grape Space Coaster, to the All GM Car Show in Woodland Hills, Calif. About 200 cars were in attendance, mostly stock, separated by make: Buick, Oldsmobile, Cadillac, Pontiac, Chevy and a new GM Performance section. One of Pinup Pole Show's favorite photographers, my friend, Ryan Enos, brought his camera to the show and after I got a 20 min beauty nap in on the grass, Ryan and I had some fun right there amongst all the classics. Lights, camera, action! You’ll notice these photos aren’t in the usual Pinup Pole Show retro styling, and that’s because we both wanted to capture a more owner-and-car vibe than model-and-car aesthetic. Plus my purple sweats and Vans just matched so well. That makes this week’s Pinup Pole Show Pinup of the Week me, Tonya Kay, with my 1965 Buick Riviera, the Grape Space Coaster, photographed by Ryan Enos at the All GM Car Show. Let’s talk to Ryan, the photographer himself:
TONYA KAY: What is your background in visual art?
RYAN ENOS: I've done a lot of different types of digital creative work in my career. Lately I've been designing and animating graphics packages for TV and web based content. My current pursuit is getting better at lifelike automotive CG renders.
TONYA KAY: When and why did you get into photography?
RYAN ENOS: I got into photography around 2010. I got curious about what qualities made the photos I liked stand out and started taking my camera everywhere for a few years. It was a creative reprieve for me. Something I was making for myself and not for a client or boss.
TONYA KAY: What is one tip you have for making cars look their best?
RYAN ENOS: Think of ways to create contrast or separation between your subject and everything else in frame. Don't be afraid to move around a little and see if you can find a more interesting angle.
TONYA KAY: You shoot a lot of car shows - what were the unique challenges of the All GM Car Show?
RYAN ENOS: It was nice getting to shoot in lush grass during spring, so I found myself going for a lot of low perspectives.
TONYA KAY: What new creative techniques are you currently learning? Can we see any of them in these photos?
RYAN ENOS: Always trying to gain more control of my lighting and experimenting with new mixes of natural and artificial light. You can definitely tell I am using off camera flash in this set.
TONYA KAY: What is it like working with models and cars in the same photograph?
RYAN ENOS: It is so much fun because you have a lot of different colors and textures to combine and light. And patina goes with just about anything.

Man, What a gorgeous Riv! Nicest I’ve ever seen. Congrats to Tonya for keeping it in such beautiful shape…….
Right on! Anaheim Rod and Custom did a nice restore of her about a year ago. Had a battery explode in the fresh engine compartment pretty much immediately (figures!). But I’ll be getting those parts redone soon, too. The Riv is just classy and brutal at the same time. Love the lines.
Sorry about your battery explosion, had one myself years ago on a 64 Impala SS….that sulfuric acid is definitely nasty…life is so darn contrary, of course it should happen after your engine compartment was just detailed…….agree with your comments about the class & brutality, lol! Do you have the 425 engine with dual quads? Thanks.
You know what I’m talkin about, then. Sorry about your Impala! I wish I could attach an engine photo in comments here – it still is a looker! I’ve got the 401 single carb set up. Put the original manifolds back on after the previous owner had done quite a bit of header work for drag racing. The performance on this Riv is great.
I agree about you going with the stock exhaust manifolds, Headers can be a pain (gaskets leaking, difficult to change spark plugs, etc.) 401 4 barrel engines run well, lotsa’ torque…If you ever get any pics of the engine, I’d like to see them……….the very best of luck with your beautiful Riv!

Tonya, Just responding to your reply about the engine pics on your Riv. (There wasn’t a reply word to click on) I received the single photo of you with the car (your grape outfit is awesome, and matches the car’s beautiful paint) So the 401 engine in the car is known as a “nailhead”, very strong & reliable engine, as well as powerful too. I absolutely love the documentation trail of owners since new, you just don’t find that much with these old cars. The resto on the car is done extremely well, Lord that interior is gorgeous too, I’ve always loved white and I’m betting it’s leather. I’ve been fortunate to have been in the old car hobby for many years, and have owned so many of the old muscle cars along the way. What is so striking about yours is that it’s just so different & cool. Engine detailing is real nice. Please feel free to stay in contact as I just love your car and discussing the hobby in general. We didn’t do leather, actually, cause I’m a vegan! We put some vinyl on the outer and the center is softer boat fabric (for when I wear skirts or shorts in the HOT Los Angeles summer:-). But truth be told, I’ve gotta get some white slip covers made though. I didn’t realize how easy it is to stain or make dingy that white was gonna be. I’m always crawling around under and around my car, then get inside. Just imagine! And my models/performers in Pinup Pole Show – we all pose inside the car. All of us at once. Even blue jeans rub blue off onto the seats. It’s enlightening to say the least.
So glad to know you’re Vegan, I truly love animals as well, ALL animals. The vinyl seating with soft boat fabric definitely works, has the appearance of leather. Was thinking maybe you could go with clear plastic seat covers on her. Just an idea. Back in the day, they were quite popular. Again, best of luck to you & your beautiful Riv! P.S. I have two awesome Greyhounds & a Desert Tortoise named Rowdy, lol! They’re all so very cool & loving as family members……….

Right on! Now you see my real “car show” attire. Haha. I always wait until I’m there to shine her up – sweats are perfect for that. Love my Riv. Looking forward to more shows soon.
