Pinup Pole Show Pinup of the Week: Tonya Kay

Click Here to Begin Slideshow So on morning two of The Classic Auto show this past weekend in Costa Mesa, Calif., before the doors are even open to the public, I hear a voice next to my car say, “The Grape Space Coaster.” Who is this man with a camera who knows my 1965 Buick Riviera’s given name? It’s none other than Maxx K, photographer, brilliant mind and classic car owner. Maxx K and I commenced doing what people at classic car shows do - we loitered and chatted for a good hour about cars, shows, repairs, cruises and shared connections. And we made a date to shoot a few photos later - some in my Riviera and the ones you see here in his Corvair. And that makes me, Tonya Kay, this week’s Pinup Pole Show Pinup of the Week. I'm posing with Maxx K’s 1965 Corvair, wearing C Bella fashion and photographed by the car owner himself, Maxx K! Let’s talk to Maxx K about this speedy ride. TONYA KAY: What car do you have and does it have a name? MAXX K: I own a 1965 Corvair Monza 110 Powerglide convertible. Her name is Miss Jacqueline. TONYA KAY: What or who got you into classic cars? MAXX K: I’d have to say that I first seriously caught the car bug after my dad acquired his 1963 Porsche 356. My first ride in the car really set me off, and I thought, “Wow. This is actually pretty cool!” Since then, I’ve been a serious car enthusiast. TONYA KAY: What drew you to your Corvair specifically? MAXX K: I would probably say that it was painted in Crocus Yellow, which was a color that was only available in 1965. TONYA KAY: Tell us about an unbelievable accident you had. MAXX K: Probably when I collided with a couch in the Spring Street tunnel, underneath the runway at the Long Beach Airport. Yes, this actually happened! Either someone randomly dumped a couch in the middle of this tunnel, or it must’ve fallen out of someone’s truck. Everyone was swerving around it. I had my blinker on, and the person next to me would not let me change lanes. As a result, I saw the couch, slammed on the brakes and careened right into it. I have a pair of S.E.V. Marchal fog lamps installed on the car, and the lens from the left fog lamp was destroyed. Eventually I repaired the lamp, but I need to put a new bulb in. TONYA KAY: You are a member of the Surf City Classics Car Club. What cruises and events does the club attend? What do they put on? MAXX K: Surf City Classics is a classic car club based in Huntington Beach, Calif. We meet every Wednesday evening at 5PM and cruise down Main Street in Downtown Huntington Beach. A lot of us go to some of the local shows, like the Carl’s Jr. Car Show in Westminster, Calif., held every Tuesday night. Donut Derelicts in Huntington Beach, held every Saturday morning at Adams Ave. Donuts is another one we’ve been to. Two of our members brought home awards at this year’s Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona. My all-time favorite event that we attend as a club has to be Cruisin’ for a Cure, held every September at the Orange County Fairgrounds. Not only is this a car show, but you also get to take your car on a cruise while the show is happening! TONYA KAY: What’s next on the Corvair? MAXX K: The next thing that I really want to do to my Corvair is have it repainted in the same Crocus Yellow. There are some spots on the car where the rust is starting to show through, and there are areas where the paint bubbled. The left rear fender does not match the rest of the car’s paint.
