This week’s Pinup Pole Show Pinup of the Week is Monica Kay who is posing next to Hugo Guardado’s (of Duke’s cc Hollywood) 1957 Ford Fairlane! And we’re thrilled to speak with photographer Shane Karns about being in front of the camera, printing his own work and inspiration from the world around him.

TONYA KAY: When the camera is turned around, what goes through your mind when you are the one posing for a shot?

SHANE KARNS: Ha! I'm usually annoyed at how uncomfortable I feel and thinking I really shouldn't be. Then I think about what directions I might give my subjects and try to make myself look as good as possible for the photographer.

TONYA KAY: Do you also do printing of your work and if so, what is something you learned in that journey?

SHANE KARNS: Yes, I love printing images in my home office/studio! There's something magical about seeing and holding a print over looking at it digitally. I've learned that while prints aren't in as much use as they used to be, they're certainly never going to go out of date. I need to print more!

TONYA KAY: Where do you get your inspiration from?

SHANE KARNS: There used to be a few photographers that I followed closely but I haven't done that in years. Generally my inspiration comes from what's right in front of me even if I'm not holding my camera. I'm constantly inspired by the way light is hitting a subject or location. I'm inspired by tender of funny moments in front of me. Often it's those everyday things we do that can actually make great photographs. Even with my girls, it can be as simple as them tying their shoes, or doing their homework, those simple things can turn into beautiful images given a little thought into the composure. There's a very diverse amount of life happening around all of us that can no doubt make for beautiful imagery!
