Southern Drag Boat Association Flies into Grove, Oklahoma for Wolf Creek Nationals

The Southern Drag Boat Association (SDBA) held its Wolf Creek Nationals the weekend of July 7/8 on Grand Lake at Wolf Creek Park in Grove, Oklahoma. Records were broken and one pilot took to the air in his race.

Records Fall and Boats Fly

Kebin Kinsley’s record-setting pass

Kebin Kinsley beat Lee Warren in the top fuel hydro finals and set a record of 3.385 seconds @ 267.380 MPH. Top Eliminator class went to Mallori Carroll in Hydro Therapy with a pass of 7.095 seconds @ 101.915. Top Alcohol Flat/Top Fuel Jet pilot Spike Gorr had a wild ride when just over five seconds into his race his boat hit a wake, went airborne, and flipped. Thankfully, Spike escaped the wreck with only a broken collarbone and some extra adrenaline. Tony Scarlata, took the class in Shazam with a pass of 5.037 @ 127.176. Finishing off the “top” classes, Top Alcohol Hydro went to Total Kaos and pilot Rick Allen.

Upsets Abound

Scarlata was the only top seed of the winners listed above and the upsets continued in the other classes. Third seed Brian Elledge in My Allibi won the Stock Eliminator class with a pass of 9.065 @ 94.304. In River Racer, Blackie Boehme in Blackie’s Magic took the win from fourth seed in 10.129 @ 72.922. Quick Eliminator was another rare class where the first seed, Henry Behne in Lucky Draw took first in 6.802 @ 94.566.

Cheezy on the Shamro, driven by Ryan O’Hara took the Personal Watercraft I division with a pass of 10.795 @ 64.873 from the second seed. Third seed Cole Allen drove Desperado to the win in Pro Outlaw with a pass of 5.260 @ 178.020. The biggest upset of the weekend came in Pro Mod with seventh seed Casey Beal driving Another Split Decision to the win in 5.626 @ 147.580.

Third seed Vic Fugate took the win in Pro Eliminator with a pass of 6.573 @ 117.15 in Blacked Out. Second seed Jesse James, Jr took the Modified Eliminator class with a pass of 8.492 @ 863. The Lake Racer class only had one competitor, Christy Moroloes, in The Fighting Hulligan Christy’s pass went by in 10.587 @ 75.422.
