Donny Schatz put his ninth World of Outlaws Championship in the bag on the opening night of the Textron Off Road World of Outlaws World Finals, run at the dirt track at Charlotte Motor Speedway. David Gravel and Trey Starks took top honors in Friday and Saturday Qualifying.
Track conditions were good throughout the evening, as David Gravel set the fastest time in Friday’s program with a lap of 12.530. More than two hours later, Trey Starks did the same for Saturday’s program with a lap of 12.606. Starks was the second to last of 52 sprint cars in the program.
“It’s really nice to see the track didn’t change with all the laps put on it. As a driver, especially when you don’t draw well, that’s all you can ask for. The track being equal for everyone is a big key when you have a big car count,” said Starks, who was also fourth quick in Friday’s program.
“Fast time is obviously how you want to start any night. Hopefully we can park this CJB Motorsports on the frontstretch a couple of times this weekend,” Gravel said. In addition to his top performance Friday, Gravel was third quick in Saturday’s program.
All that North Dakota native Donny Schatz had to do to clinch the championship was take the Green Flag in hot laps, but he blazed past those minimum requirements taking second quick in both the weekend’s programs. He’ll be looking for his 20th win of the season this coming weekend.
