The middle of August sees hundreds of mouth-watering examples of automotive excellence descend on the Monterey Bay Area. There are exhibition races of cars as many as a hundred years old. There’s also a Concourse d’Elegance at the famed Pebble Beach Golf Course. Fans from around the globe and participants from 15 countries and 31 states were also present.

204 Vehicles Competed for Top Honors at the Concours d’Elegance

This year’s Best of Show - Bruce McCaw’s 1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer.

There were 155 vehicles registered for this year’s Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance; 49 cars were invited to participate in the Concours judging for top honors. Bellevue, Washington’s Bruce R. McCaw took home the Rolex Best of Show Award for his 1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer. McCaw’s car was restored by Lebanon, New Jersey’s Steve Babinsky, with the restoration finishing up just the week before the show. Bruce won a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust 41.

McCaw’s brother John was also in the Best of Show competition, and his 1957 Ferrari 315 S Scaglietti Spyder won best in class. A 1932 Packard 906 Twin Six Dietrich Convertible Victoria, owned by William E. (Chip) Connor, was also present on the winner’s stand after the show.

Laguna Seca Hosts Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion

510 of the world’s best classic racing cars came together for four days starting Monday, August 22 for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, the world’s premiere gathering of history’s greatest racing cars. These cars were grouped into 14 classes covering almost all forms and eras of racing. Although the year’s theme was honoring 70 years of Ferrari and the Diamond Jubilees of the Ferrari Junior, Lee Talbot and his #62 1967 Ginetta G4 received a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona for winning the Rolex Spirit of Monterey Award for 2017.

236 in Attendance for The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering

Milner’s 1964 ATS 2500 GTS took home Best of Show at The Quail.

Bruce Milner of California and his 1964 ATS 2500 GTS, chassis number 2006, took home the title of Rolex Circle of Champions Best of Show as well as a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona. The 2500 GTS, built by Automobili Turismo e Sport in Bologna, Italy, was the first GT car to be equipped with a mid-engine layout.

Ann Brockington, hometown unknown, took home the Spirit of the Quail Award for her 1938 Packard Eight Model 1601 Cabriolet. This year’s The Quail gathering, the 15th, had eight separate themes:

• Originals
• Sports and Racing Motorcycles
• The Great Ferraris
• Pre-War Sports and Racing
• Post-War Sports
• Post-War Racing
• Supercars
