The 47th Annual Governor’s Cup Championship, which has been held at Sacramento Raceway since its inception, took place on a beautiful, clear day this year. The event, which is really a car exhibition as much as a collection of races, was on Sept. 10. It is the last big race scheduled at the Sacramento Raceway for this year.

With eleven different races, ranging from Nostalgia Nitro to drag bikes, the Governor’s Cup has something for everyone. General Jerry Lee was present, and performed some impressive wheel stands with his new engine. Jason Richey and Bryan Hall made some AA/FA runs, while Terry Cox and John Weaver did a dragster vs Funny Car run.

The Sacramento Raceway Dragstrip was built in 1964 by Vastine Smith. While it initially struggled to survive financially, ever since it was taken over by Dave Smith in ’68 it has been on an upward track. The raceway contributes $50,000 each year to local causes, including schools and fundraisers.

Results for this year’s Governor’s Cup can be found on the Sacramento Raceway’s website.
