Over the weekend at Pomona, veteran Funny Car racer Gary Densham was involved in an incident. Densham, 69, from Bellflower, Calif., was checked and released by NHRA emergency services officials following an incident with his Funny Car going out of control and crashing in the shutdown area during the third qualifying session. The parachutes on Densham’s Dodge Charger Funny Car failed to deploy, which resulted in a failure to slow down his car following a career-best 4.050 second run at 307.70 mph, good enough to qualify 11th in the 16 car order. Densham’s car plowed into the sand traps and came to a stop in the safety net.
Fortunately, the safety net, the Grant Downing-built chassis, and the safety equipment all worked as they should have and kept Densham safe, allowing him to climb out of the car unharmed.
I just hope that crash doesn’t retire gary. it be good pr if john force really did help him out and give him or loan him one of his old cars that jfr would never use again
