The WoO will be continuing the limited tire rule implemented a few seasons ago. Racers were originally granted an open tire rule which allowed competitors the use of any Late Model tire. The open tire rule was replaced with a flexible tire rule that limits it’s competitors to roughly three or four compound options each race, with the allowed tires adjusted based on what’s best for each track.
The difference between a three-compound tire rule and an open tire rule can be substantial for race teams, cutting the required tire inventory by as much as half, according to Darrell Lanigan, a WoO Late Model Series staple. Lannigan will be taking up to 70 tires for his upcoming February tour, which would have been at least twice as much had the open tire rule still be in place. This three compound tire rule has been beneficial to racing teams who now don’t have to purchase large amounts of tires just for a single race, especially for the local racing teams on a budget.
