With him having an 1/8 MPH of 104 doesnt that say something about the power he is making already ?

He has the MPH to be running 6.50's - 6.60's yet he only runs 7.10's. For whatever reason it is falling off after the 1/8

yes dcarr, the mph is the biggest facter in hp. i do agree with you that when the bugs are worked out it should be there. i think it was his first time at the track and if was i think he's doing a great job. there's a little to make up in a few spots and if he works on one at a time then it will fly. there could be 3tenths in just locking the dist and setting the timing then add a mech sec carb you could see 4tenths in the front half.

thanks guys for the info thus far. i have always locked dis and usually like 38 degrees but for some oddball reason i jumped from 32 to 40 i had it at 32 because i had a back fire thru exhaust when i let out but i fixed that with header leaks.after my 104 mph run with 32 degrees and 77 front jets with power valve and 92 rear jets with pv plugged i looked at plugs and they were white so a old racer at the track told me to go with the factory specs for the carb of 84 squared with valves so i jumped to 85 with valve and 95 with out . my 60 foot went to 1.63 and my 1/8th was 100 and my qt was 11.28 at 120 but i also had jumped my timing to 40. . my plugs looked gray to black and it ran like crap. so i went down to 80 front with pv and left 95 rear alone but i ran out of track time. im firly new to racing . i had an old 73 camaro that i had dialed in nicely to a 11.40 but im trying to the first of my small local group to hit the 10's i know this combo is capable but i have some tuning to do.my old 406 liked 1.3/4 pipes with 3.5 exhaust and slowed to a 11.60 on 3 inch exhaust . i will be keeping a close eye on this site so i can learn and tune it better . im leaning on 36 timing, slicks and no et streets ,4.30 or 4.56 gears and 1.3/4 to 1.7/8 headers and run them open at track and back to 3 inch on street. what ya think... thanks again

two more thoughts one i run at a local track that is a bit on the cheap side with light that need adjusted every now and then and has not time read outs . but i can get 20 runs in 4 hours if i wanted. but i try to run it 4 or 5 times a trip. the other is that im going to try a 950 dp as well thanks

make small adjustments at a time stop jumping all over the place with the tune. set the timing at 34 to start and work your way up from there 1 deg at a time. i think you would be surprised if you seen some engines dynoed and seen the power fall off in power over 1deg in time or 1 size in jets. you will never find the tune by making to big of a change all at once. the best advise i can tell you is slow down and it will come changing gears from 4.10 to 4.30 will do nothing. headers may help some but making the car run right will be worth more then a gear or headers. i would put a mech sec carb on it before i spent the cash to replace the gear and headers. just a f.y.i i ran 1 7/8 to 2" step header on a 1000hp small block with 3.5 exh pipes and mufflers.
