I believe when they agree to appear on the show the show pays the judgment. I'm not absolutely certain but I think I saw that in the credits somewhere.

well they aint teaching these scammers nothing. i think they should be the ones to pay for everything.
well they are....sorta. What it amounts to is, they are paid to be on the show, and the judgement is taken out of the money they were to be paid. That's how I understand it anyway.

well the scammer shouldnt get paid anything and still have to pay the 5000

I Agree Avery...but i am afraid to say Juge Judy is made for T.V....not happening in everyday life..sad to say but true..
