Default Diesel for cleaning engine?

Hi All Its been eons since I did a engine teardown and part swap out. I am working on a 71 318 I pulled the old dead carb and manifold off and installing a TQ 850 and 4BBl manifold. I am trying to remember if dielse will hurt anything as I need to clean the lifter/cam area as no matter how hard I tried some gasket molocules and some crud fell down in that area. I was thinking I used diesel last time and pulled the drain plug and washed what I could not grab down and out. I am talking about very small items and misc amounts of crud that fell in that area.
I don't forsee diesel causing any harm but I thought I ask you all.
I am also removing heads to inspect since I am in there I only have to remove a few more bolts and its vetter safe then sorry.

I assume you have the pan off also?

Diesel is fine, gas is fine, then some water and air
