I tow 18,000 with a C4500 Kodiak. No problems. Had a 95 C3500 with the 6.5, it didn't like towing anything.
You also probably need to look at the truck wheelbase. The longer the better. I probably wouldnt' do it with a short w/b truck.

Trailer
I have a 3500 GMC 1998 HD 4-Dr.Dually,4x4.And the Trailer is a 2003 Pace 45' that weigh's in @ 9400 MT,and we usually Gross around 15,Grand.
The Truck has a 7.4.4L 80-E.Pulls the Load and Stops with NO Problems!
I had a 1992 GMC Toter,8'Box plus the 6' bed.It was Nicew as far as the Electric BRAKES,but the 366 Gasser>?Would NOT pull a NASTY WHORE OFF THE STINKPOT!
The P/Up is MORE Versitale!!!
Hope this HELPS.
