Default mellings oil pumps

has anyone had problems with mellings oil pumps on drag cars breaking i was told there was a certain casting that are giving problems in small block chevys?

Mine broke,cost $1800 to fix,bearings and crank and new BILLET MOROSO pump.No problems since

i was told gm complained about cost of pumps so melling made the castings thinner to save 8 cents apump my friend broke 2 before finding this out they are making a different pump for off road now but it was an expensive lesson seems mellings should put some type of warning on the box of the one with the thinner casting!

I have had a bad one ,would not hold oil pressure once the motor reached 160 degrees. The pressure drop to nothing the only thing that saved the motor was it was a fresh build and still had assembly lube on the bearings when I took it back apart. My brother had one that had way too much pressure and would blow the filter when it started up cold .

I believe that problem came about because the SBC Melling good pump used to be the M55HV part number. But Melling made this number the cheap pump GM wanted, instead of making a new number for the cheap pump.

Melling made new series of good pumps with new numbers but dropped the ball not letting the racing public know.

There were also issues about going to cheaper gears that were not billet anymore, but made from compressed powder process.

Melling still makes good pumps if you know the correct numbers. If you bought a Milodon or Moroso you actually got Melling some of the time.

There is a Canadian stock car company that makes forged steel pump body oil pumps for SBC and BBC that is an alternative to more expensive billet pumps. Competition Products sells them.

i did some checking today with summit tech line they told me not to use the m55 the good numbers were m55a hv or 10553 melling some biulders are still not aware of this i have a 406 sbc with 18 degree heads that dynoed 754hp and 620 ft lbs of torqe thank god i havent made a pass with it yet because it has the weak punp in it easy fix now just drop the pan and change it dont really like to use high volume so i think ill go with the 10553

Had a melling pump fail in a big block chevy, caught it in time, never again will I use a melling pump, running a tilton billet oil pump now. "MADE IN THE USA"

Wow, thanks for the updated info. Always used the M55HV and never had a problem. I'm building two new small blocks right now and will definitely change to better pumps.

prowagon. summit techline told me the m55a hv or the 10553 mellings were ok to use its amazing how many people dont know its the stock m55 thats the bad casting melling dropped the ball on this one if you need further info call summit tech line and ask for lawrence. he is the only lawrence in the tech line dept.

Default Melling oil pumps

I have had several issues with the Melling pump after using them for 45 years so I started using the Melling Select with 0 problems. These are in drag and circle track engines. Later J.Smith 4621 racing
