ok I have a question.I have run th400s 3 pseeds for 20 years and always started in 1st and went to third gear before rolling out of the box.Is this wrong to do.I have never broken a trans or even a hint of problems. Not questioning or saying anyone is wrong this is just info I would like to know.Should you start in second if its a manual valvebody and if its not you will have to start in first..Please clarify...thanks

Well, if you knew anything about transmissions, you'd know to NEVER do a burnout in 1st gear with a 3-speed transmission.

When the 1-2 shift occurs in a non-loaded condition, such as a burnout, the low roller sprag can over speed and fail, causing a catastrophic failure like the one you encountered.

The same failure can happen if there is a driveshaft or rear end failure at any point when power is being applied.

The same failure can occur when you shift into neutral at the top end of the track.

If the drum failed, how would they know it was cracked prior? How do you know the low roller sprag didn't fail when you did an improper burnout?

There's what can happen if you start your burnout in first, or go into neutral going through the traps.

That will also happen if the low clutch sprag fails.

I mean, it's only your life... That whole drum can come right up through the car and out the windshield. That's why there's straps going under the transmission pan locking it to the shield up top.

Start in 2nd or third, and make sure you end in third. When the tires hook, get off the throttle or you can burn the clutches up.

If you have enough power to do high gear only, that's the best way.

I would guess so... :?

Ask Hutch over there what to do for auto valve bodies. I would have to assume that not many who are racing use auto valve bodies.

Just to clear this up...

This transmission was sold over two years ago to a customer and was sold (changed hands) two times in between now and then. I won't get into the real story about how this transmission changed hands but from what I understand one customer owed another, etc. You know how it goes from there.

This transmission was not originally built for the vehicle that it ended up in, which was not at all anything that Tillman Speed in any way suggested nor endorsed.

How can you possibly prove that there was a crack before the disasterous burnout you mention? As everyone else stated here... you can't do a burnout in first gear like that. You never mentioned that to us at the shop, either?!

Of course we're not going to do anything about a 2 year old transmission that wasn't built for the spec'd car that it went into and changed hands two times in the mean time.

I'm sorry about your problem that you encountered, but in this particular situation I feel that posting ads on craigslist and racingjunk slandering us is not the way to handle it.

Maybe you missed the terms and conditions that you have to check in order to make a post. In case you missed them:

Chris,
Thanks for coming on here and clearing up your companies name. It always seems there is more to the story than whats originally posted!

Thanks again and welcome to the forum!
