Big block chrysler 383 or 413
I am looking to put a big block in my 72 cuda, 440's are getting hard to find, have found several 413's and 383's. what would make the better build. Would like around 425-450 horse before the 200 shot of nitros. Have done several "stock" rebuilds, this will be my first performance build. I am setting the 340 off to the side. Is this an easy conversion from small block to big block? Any advice will be apreaciated

the 400 is by far the best. The 383 is a waste of time and money to build. 413 is not as plentiful as the 400 is and has some pecuaiar traits in the valvetrain. $00 block is stronger and is more often built. The 400 is ok too. Better to get the early 440 but the newer ones can still go to a .040 or .060 bore. I gues you know there is a difference in deck ht with the B and the RB blocks.

Actauly Ed, not to argue to argue, but the 383 is a great choice these days to use. For one, there are a ton of them that people have horded, can be found still, and make a great starting point. Ever heard of a 496 big block chevy? Well, its very easy to build a 496 out of a 383. Whats wrong with that?
If you have a 400 block, then use it. If you have a 413, they can work also for a nice stroker. If your talking just building off the core, and not building a stroker, then I would sorta agree, but for what he is looking to do, 450hp is so simple to make with a 383, why not use it if you have it, and thats all he really wants? Mild porting on any of the mopar heads, and a mild hydrauilic cam, and they can make 450hp easily.

I THINK IF YOU CHECK IT OUT A 383 HAS THE SAME REV CAPABILITIES AS A SMALL BLOCK CHEVY/ARE VERY EASY TO FIND/AND MAKE HORSEPOWER VERY QUICKLY ---I KNOW CUBES ARE NICE[413-400-440] BUT THE 383 IS SWEET TO START BUILDING THOSE CUBES WITH!!!---I KNOW I AM A FORD MAN BUT MY OLDER BROTHER IS A CHYRSLER FREAK!! 8) 8)

If I am wrong, I am wrong.
Last 383 I built weas way back in the early 1980's. I have built several Mopars over the years but all my Mopar guys want to use either the 440 or the 400 blocks, even if they had the 383 blocks. So that is the direcetion I have been going.
I also do something a little not Mopar recommended but it works ok. I have done several using the lowly 516 casting number cylinder heads and working those out using bigger vlaves and lots of porting. Mopar calls that a closed chamber head. I make all my Mopar engines into a quench/squish style of engine even when I have to use the 906 heads.

i don't know which one i would run, because i'm a chevy person, but a friend of mine is all Crysler, he likes the 400 blk. and the best place to buy parts is (440source.com) Man they got 2618 forged pistons for $500.00 any stroke and either of the engines you mentioned, cheap to build.
