Default 454 vs 700R4

I have a fresh 454 in a '72 Chevelle. Right now I have a TH400 with a 3000 rpm converter and 4.11 gears. I found that I spending more time on the street than the strip and want overdrive because at 55-60 mph I am running about 3200-3500 rpm. I have a 700R4 with about 50,000 miles on it in a '89 Chevy 2500. I guess my question is should I swap the TH400 for the 700R4 and is there anything that I should think about before I start? Will the 700R4 hold up the the big block? All help would be great. Thanks.

I got a 700r4 in my Z28. I'm also installin a 465 in front of it now. It had a pretty well built 383 stroker in it before and it held up fine. The guy I bought the car from said that he carried it to a tranny shop and had kevlar bands and sum other upgrades did to it. That guy said with the upgrades it could handle bout 500 hp. the big block I'm installing now will be a lil above those numbers. If it goes out I'm gonna look for a 4L80E to go in mine. but I guess its according to how much horse you are putting to it too..hope this helps a lil
