    Changing a 400 trans to a 4 speed in a 68 Firebird

    Any idea what's involved and the cost for the complete change over?

    Well, quite a bit involved. You will need to re-position the transmission mount,
    you will need a bellhousing,flywheel,clutch, pressure plate, clutch pedal set up, clutch linkage,shifter, shifter linkage,and possibly a hydraulic clutch cylinder to start with.

    Also check the speedometer gear in the transmission. It's easer to remove the tailshaft housing with the trans out of the car. A good shop will tell you which shaft gear and which plastic "driven" gear you will need based on your rear end ratio.

    Edit: You will probably have to cut or replace the driveshaft tube and get another transmission yoke.

    If by chance tour car has the brackets for a clutch pedal it shouldn't be bad at all. My son has a 68 Camaro SS that has a four speed in it but over the past twenty plus years we have put a few different motors in it and have ran a 350 Turbo in it, a power glide, and the four speed. With these three transmission we never had to move the transmission mount or change driveshafts. I think we did have to change the yoke with the power glide but it was always a very easy switch. Your biggest challenge will be the clutch pedal if you don't have the brackets for one under the dash. Everything else will easy and cheap other than the transmission.

    Your car will use the same parts as the early camaros and Novas from 68 to 72 and a lot of parts from other years as well.
