starter bind or stuck
on my 400 sbc is semi assembled as heads and valve-train but no plugs in the motor so theres no compression i have a starter that worked in a car two years ago and now is on this motor. The drive gear pops out hits the flywheel(auto tranny th350) but wont turn over the motor and slides back in but just catches and gets stuck on flywheel going back in. im wondering why it wont spin the motor over theres no compression in the cylinder and the rotationg assembly is all new and spins over no problem. I've already checked all connections and battery tried three different ones looking for ideas on why it wont spin the motor over

Did you check the starter flexplate for proper clearance? Sounds like the starter is too close to the flexplate. Are you sure the the starter and flexplate are a matched set. I believe there are two different ones, 153 and 168 teeth.

ive already shimmed the starter pretty far over 1/8" out and its the right starter i stole it off another 400 sbc with the same flywheel i think im going to throw the towel at this starter and just try to buy another one
