Default Powerglide ?

I was told you can tell the difference in a 1.76 and a 1.82 gearset by the input shaft length. Something like 11 7/8 for one and 11 5/8 for the other if I remember right. but which one is which?

The best way is to measure the output shaft with a pair of calipers. I don't know the exact dimensions in my head but the 1.76 is bigger around by a small amount.I have 3 sets of 1.76 planets in the shed if you want I can measure one. Also the input shaft length as mentioned but someone could have changed that(not likely but possible) Not to mention some people don't like you pulling the shaft out of a trans you haven't bought yet...don't know why but a guy got upset at me for doing it.

Mike if this is for your car, look into a 1.80. You fast enough and make enough hp it should have one.

Yeah David it's for my car. I just wanted to be able to tell what gearset it had for bargining. I figured the 1.76 would at least be worth something if I could buy it right. It's a totally stock glide. Just wanted the case.

I agree with you on the 1.80 gearset.

Just FYI A stock 1.76 planetary set is worth about $100 -$125 by itself.

I base that on several sets I have watched on ebay the last couple of months. All of them sold for around that price. One seller kept posting them one after another for $100 BIN and they never lasted more than a couple of days. He sold 3 or 4 sets in a row

I look for powerglide stuff weekly, a lot of times you can find a stock powerglide with the 1.76 for $100-150, keep the part you need and off the 1.76 and almost break even

craiglist is great for stock glides
