That is kind of a loaded question, we really need more info on what your intended purpose is and what you've already got.

Is it a weekend warrior for bracket racing, a pulling truck, mud truck etc?
Are you wanting more torque or just upper RPM horsepower or both?

In general a good set of flat tops, some good breathing heads, a 280 magnum cam, a performer RPM air gap and holly 750dp would wake it up nicely.

It's a budget thing, it depends what you want to spend or can afford too spend, Dart steel heads are about $700.00 good heads for the street or racing (you will have to drill the steam holes in the heads if you do a lot of street driving) decent cam, intake, carb and headers and you're looking at around 450 HP, all for less than $2,000.00 in parts.

i have a used cam for sbc 265-400 cid,i took out of my 406 early this year because i had a new solid roller cam,new heads, intake&carb installed.im trying to sell all of it if your interested.engine builder said the cam and valve train looked good.cam is a hydrulic comp cam #12-250/grind#cs xe284h-10.
240/246@50 507/510 lift, carb is aed 750cfm,dont know manufacture of roller rocker arms but they are purple and 1.5 ratio.push rods are comp cam.lifters are comp cam.also have a open plenium intake.this combo with a set of proline heads took my pump gas 3500lb monte carlo to a best time of 11.60 in the 1/4 mile on m/t drag radials.you can have it all for $400.00.if you need pic's let me know and i can e-mail some to you.and yes i did drive the car on the street.
