my son is not much in to mechanics, only when he needs a fix,
he drives a 2003 cobra and the front pass wheel sounded like
an old lady bowling, his bearings busted, had to remove/replace
the hubb and part of the bearing stayed on the spindle, my son was
fustrated that it would not budge, i got out my pencil torch heated
up the race and told him to tap it all around like a pickle jar lid.
boom, it came off, next, he freaked when the new hubb got stuck
as soon as you placed it on the spindle, he looks at me and said,
got any more tricks dad, i said yes son, it's called SCIENCE, i placed
the hubb in the oven @ 350 for 30 min. and with big gloves pushed
it on the spindle and it went all the way to the end nice and flush.
my son's eyes wear big he laughed and said, "dad, you blinded
me with science" he was totaly freaked how easy it went on,
and i told him not to touch it, but he still burned his knuckle :wink:

He will take that event with him for the rest of his life and USE that knowledge again sometime. Very kool to pass on tips and knowledge to the younger generation.

yea, my son said he would never forget that and would remember
to heat metal to expand it, and not to touch it before it cools down :wink:

I remember the first car I had. it was a 1949 Dodge Coronet. I rebuilt the engine and needed to replace the ring gear on the flywheel. My dad got a cold chisel and showed me where to hit the old one. I hit it and it split and slid right off. Then he had me put the flywheel in the freezer. We put the ring gear in the oven, set at 300 degrees. Then we removed them about half an hour later and that ring gear fell over the flywheel and seated perfectly. I was amazed that it worked. I guess that is when I realized my dad was alot smarter and I wasn't so smart. My dad was a motor mechanic on PT Boats in WWII. I have used that method for several types of repairs where an interference fit is needed.

hey fla1976, want to thank your father for his services, and i have to
tell you that even tho you did not realize it, your dad blinded you
with science, from WW2, and a navy man, nothing like a PT boat,
man those vessels were cool, nothing but a load of torpedo trouble :wink:

Yes he did. And he loved that Plywood Navy as he called them.

I had my wife put her spool in the freezer and her bearings in the oven. she was like"where did you learn that from"? I was like "Who taught you how to race"? teh girl learned so much from me in the last 2 years that she couldn't learn from anybody else. her stepdad knew everything (rip), when he met me, he couldn't hold a candle to anything I did. I love teaching people stuff. And if I don't know how to do it, I will find out how to do it.

jax, my son kept burning his knuckles on the hub cause it did not
look hot, i kept telling him, remember, its hot, burning hot :wink:
