Default WELDED CRANKSHAFT

Would you guys be afraid to use a crank that had been welded up and offset ground? I am not talking about a race car..just a street car that will never see the dragstrip. The reason I ask is I have a GM steel BBC crank that was offset ground to build a 496. I got the engine free from my Uncle. It was in a dirt track car many years ago. It is std std but has one journal that is chewed up and will need repaired..Just trying to decide whether to keep it or not. The block is a 4 bolt 454 block. I was considering having the thing fixed and putting a BB together for my Chevelle I'm building right now . I have enough parts sitting around to do it cheap if the crank is usable. I know nobody welds stroker cranks anymore since there are cheap aftermarket cranks but this one was free and I already have it..Only other bad thing is it's cross drilled, but like I said the car will never be raced I just want a BB in it because it looks cool.

I put one in a street 454 about 15 yrs ago and it's still in the car running. It might get driven about 3-4000 miles a year.

it's a "3521" crank which I think is a 5140.

I've got a GM 5140, 454 crank if you need one cheap. It's .030/.030.

Uses the internal balance flexplate (has a weight welded on the rear flange), but standard external balancer.

Double keyed for a blower.

It was .010/.010, but I had it sitting under a shelf that had a 1 gallon container of car wash concentrate above it. The container cracked and leaked all of that shit all down the crank.

Chaffed my ass having to take .020 off of a perfectly good crank due to surface rust.

Still has a few minor pits, but nothing that's going to hurt anything. It's freshly turned, well oiled, and sitting in my basement next to the dehumidifier. Been sitting here for about 18 months now, and still looks like it did the day I picked it up from the machine shop.

I think 5130 is the best one GM makes. Don't think they make any 4130.

And yes, GM makes 4340 cranks, same page in the catalog.

Where in the world did you get your steel numbers from? Neither one match any materials I've seen used in a crank.

Over 40 yrs ago i had a blown gas sm/blk, i had a delta welded 350 steel crank to a 3 5/8" stroke (365"s) i put 200/300 passes on the 671 blown Hilborn inj. engine, ran low 10.'s @ over 140mph ran the car from 1964 to 1970. Never an issue with the crank, it was welded and hard cromed. Went thru 3 blks, even ran the same set of alum rods. Car weighed 2450lbs per class rule Amod/sports and B/GS. Pretty good for the day and times of yesteryear.

Zip.

Slip of the brain #'s. Didn't know GM made a 4130 crank. Last time I called all they had was the 5140. That was a loooong time ago.

You might wanna try another brain gear then, because again, they don't make a 4130 crank.

They make 1053, 5140, and 4340.
