I'm putting a GM crate ZZ383 in my '72 Monte (about 3500 lbs)
It is advertised as putting out 400-450 lb/ft from 2000 rpm upto 5500.
15" rims, cam duration is 222/230 I'd like to put a 700 R4 on it and have read here that I will probably blow it up. I plan to keep this car on the street 95% of the time so the OD would be nice. Any suggestions as to where in Canada I can find a reputable builder for my core or a bullet proof trans off the shelf, or do I have to get a TH400. Any other suggestions, I realize big dollars may be involved, so any tips on getting the best value is appreciated.
btw has anyone bought from Monster transmission on E-BAY?

If money isn't a big issue, the 4L80 would be the way to go since it's turbo 400 with OD and pretty tough.

Yes they are but you can correct that. You can use a stand alone deisel trans controller or you can go to a full manuel valve body with a good rebuild kit. I personally have a Buick Grand National 200-4R trans in my El Camino with manuel toggle switch for the converter lock up, they are running these trans with 1000HP turbo buicks. It cost me about $800.00 for the full beef up. But back too the 4L80. Here is a site that sells all the parts to convert to a manuel valve body, also TCI sells one already built with the conversion. After looking back on my original recommendation, i should have suggested the 200-4R it's easier and cheaper and doesn't require a computer.

I think the 200R4 is the way to go, thanks for the advice.
I found a 4L80 here in Canada for $2000 but private sales over the 'net makes me nervous. I'll start looking for a 200R4 from a shop.

Summit has the 200R4 for around $1760 and it is built by Hughes Converters and Transmissions.

theres no reason 700 shouldn't hold up to your zz383. just need to get a good "street strip" version of the trans. be sure it has the "torque-drive" input shaft/drum assembly (heavy duty) and if you want bullet proof, get the upgraded planetaries. Get a good converter such as a transmission specialties 10" xtra low stall. i believe they say its around 2500-2800 rpm stall. You can decide if you want lock up feature or not. If you can hear the cam (moderate to large cam) id say non-lock up myself. To me it pulls the motor down too much unless you got some gears in the rear. (it should pull the cruise rpm down 200-400 rpm lower than if you went with a non-lock up.)

I know a guy that has a 700 behind a zz383 crate engine that he swapped heads to dart 230's and put a 6-71 supercharger on. Has a transmission specialties low stall-xtra heavy duty blower convertor. He took the car to local 1/8th mile dragstrip and ran 6.44 pedalling off the line because his wheelie bars were too high after he changed to 32x15 slicks from the DOT 31x18.5 hoosier tires.
