    Bluebaugh Racing’s Team Magna Fuel is back on track putting an end to a cycle of hard luck. This past weekend the team attended the Pacific Street Car Associations (PSCA) California Nationals in Fontana May 15-17, 2009. Bluebaugh and Crew Chief Deborah Woodard, ever being the little team that could, battled tough rounds to put the Magna Fuel Monte Carlo in the finals against all odds. Woodard said, previously we wondered if we had hit a wall in the field of faster competition running in the 20’s and 30’s. This race however showed again that the fast guy does not always win. Simply being ready and consistent is still paying. Bluebaugh spent several weeks and long hours before the event going though the Magna Fuel Monte Carlo optimizing what we have to work with and making small repairs. The hard work paid off. We know we are going to have to squeeze every last bit of potential out of this car and details are more critical than ever at this point. For us, it was the small stuff that added up to pushing the car just a little bit faster.

    We had some special help this weekend, said Woodard. Friction Unlimited sent new discs and floaters for our clutch. We could not have asked for a better result. We were able to put previous clutch problems behind us to concentrate on refining our tune up. In combination with our Mickey Thompson tires, putting our power to the ground is working for us. We need every bit.

    Bluebaugh qualified in the 6th position with a 6.488 @ 214.96 mph behind five of PSCA’s top competitors. In round one, Bluebaugh and the team caught a break as the Magco Corvette of Mike Maggio lost traction on the hot California track

    Round two brought the tough competition of Bob Griffith in his blown Viper who qualified with a significantly faster time of 6.404. A year ago, Griffith took Bluebaugh out with the narrowest margin of win possible, but this year Bluebaugh said not again. As the two left the starting line, the Viper took the jump. Bluebaugh not about to be beat by an inch again grabbed a spare system of nitrous rigged for the occasion and made a run for the finish. The race was so close that no one could tell who was winning and neither driver knew who crossed the finish line first. The margin of victory was .0029 going to Bluebaugh with a 6.493 @ 219.72 over Griffith with a 6.552 @ 206.92. Woodard said, it has been narrow margins between win and lose that prompted us to risk testing an extra unit of nitrous last year. In this round, it paid off doing what it was intended to do.

    In the Semi-finals, Bluebaugh battled Pro Street Champion Ed Thornton is his 63 Turbo powered Corvette in the high heat of the day. Fortunately for Team Magna Fuel, lane advantage went to Bluebaugh who took the win with a 6.587 @ 216.24 as Thornton ran considerably shy of his usual low time and high mph with a 6.750 @ 212.93

    In the final round, Bluebaugh and Team Magna Fuel met the RC Construction El Camino of Randy Walker, number one qualifier and rising threat in the competition with the help of Pro Mod legend Charles Carpenter. All gathered to watch a nitrous versus nitrous showdown in what was a spectacular side by side finish to a long hot weekend. Walker took the jump with wheels in air and torches lit. Bluebaugh grabbed for more nitrous catching up to Walker by the thousand foot mark but simply ran out of real estate to finish the job. Bluebaugh said, just another few feet and we would have had him. The day finished with Bluebaugh putting down a quicker but losing 6.461 @ 220.33 to Walker’s 6.474 @ 217.98. Woodard said, despite a hole shot loss, we are just very excited to see the gains of our hard work. Being in the finals is motivation to try that much harder.
