you could go to a 4.875 stroke and get 611 c.i.

Beg to differ, but you can't get that stroke in that short deck block.

thanks for the info. Can you use that as a rule of thumb for the short deck blocks (4.5 stroke) ? being the limit.

The Jim Pace GM book says you can run a 4.600 but you are going to be restricted by rod length and piston pin placement (can we say expensive?)
The 4.500 will work fine with lots of parts options (can we say less expensive?)

If you are able to get a 4.500 bore out that block with a 4.5 stroke you would have a 572. Those 572's make some really good power. You also need to remember the bigger you go the more head you will need which is more money. Do your homework before you start going too big.
