Shorty power glide...
I have a 1.82 stock gear set glide. The output has been re splined to make it a shorty. When I got the trans the guy said it would be fine behind my motor. It was a 406 that was only about 550 horsepower.
Well I just bought a 406 that is 738 hp at 7200 and 578 ft pounds of torque at 5800.
My car is a mild steel dragster so I am about 1850 lbs with me in it...
Do you guys think this tranny will hold up or do I need something more serious? I dont have the money for a dedenbear case glide.
I wouldnt mind trading mine and some cash for one that would work for me, if mine wont....
Thank you guys....

I'd go with the 1.76 gear set. I wouldn't mess with factory gear set. Get an aftermarket gear set (ex. "super set", etc.) They're good for 750-850 hp in medium weight cars (2200-2500lbs). we have a 1.76 set in a 61 ford falcon running 5.60's 1/8th mile. Tube chassis, all steel body exept hood and deck lid. Guessing 2450-2600lbs. Had it in car for 2 years now and no problem at all. Factory gear sets tend to break after about 125-175 runs on average.
I agree your 1.82 will not last very long at all with your hp rating. You may want to get a aftermarket planetary housing/output shaft assembly. Shorty's tend to twist the splines easy when you get up in hp/tq like your doing.

Josh, I do say get rid of the 1.82 but we have never tried to run them before, have just seen them break on other people. We do run the stock 1.76 gearsets in our cars. Nova at 2700lbs- 720hp, dragster w/BBC 1800lbs runs 8.30's, my roadster 2150 runs 9.90's. Hundreds of passes and only broke one set in the last ten years, that was in the dragster and it sees the most runs and is the quickest.

Josh, the 1.76 will hold OK, but don't waste your time with a 1.82. You will be picking up pieces. Just put another gearset in it, if you are interested I know where you can get an aftermarket 1.80 BTE set for around $800. Stock case is fine, I just pulled out an 830 HP small block and will be putting in another that will make in the neighborhood of 950 HP. Mild steel chassis won't be legal for NHRA....

The 1.76 gears themselves will be fine. The problem is the shortened output shaft. That leaves no ability for slight flex as a standard long shaft has. There are options... you can use a helical OEM 1.76 gearset in an aftermarket housing. They're around $225-250 plus the pins/etc. to assemble. Or, you can move to a complete aftermarket set. The best move IMO is to a 1.80 as it's much stronger than a helical set.

Thanks for all your input guys, I just got home with a tranny from Dion Vickers out of Alliance. It has the 1.76 TCI shorty super set in it, so I should be good to go now....
Thanks Again,
Josh
Mark my car is cert to 7.50 with no chance of getting any where that...lol... Or are you refering to your Nasty small block ride?

Josh, mine has a stock case with aftermarket 1.76 gears. The 447 ran 7.88 @ 1875 lbs, new engine going together is a 461, aluminum block(100lbs weight savings) about a point more compression, purpose built SB2's rather than reworked cup heads, and a larger cam. I'm hoping to bump under that 7.50 mark, car is good to 6.00. May have to wear a diaper(in addition to the one on the engine) the first time out.
