Default 77 pontiac 400 engine

Hello, I'm trying to identify an old engine I pulled from a 77 Catalina. It's supposed to be a 400. The #'s on by the front water inlet are 406978.

There is a YA, which means auto trans.
The # by the dist. is 86133, and the date stamp is I77 = Sept 1977.

I thought on Pontiac Motors on the passanger sie of the block they has the Cubic Inch cast into the block? Above where the fuel pump is on a SBC...

I done some quick research and here is a list of sites...
I still did not find your numbers..so are you sure you are looking in the proper location for the numbers?

numbers are on the block passenger side of the timing cover, and at the distributor in the rear, they will say the block, if its not cast in the block on the bottom by the motor mounts

im guessing the numbers you have by the water neck are the intake manifold numbers
type in pontiac block numbers and do a search its not hard there a re a few guys out there

but look for those numbers, and head numbers, and intake numbers
and we can find them out on here for fun

www.pontiacpower.net here is a good page
