Another alternative is the 516 head. They were a closed chamber design but really should have a mild port job as well as machining for bigger valves for the most bang for the buck.
If you are doing a pump gas engine, you might want to deck the block and run a shorter(lighter) piston. Alot of guys do this and run BBC pistons. The stock dimension Mopar stuff is really heavy. Also, those big blocks are sensitive to detonation so by decking the block you will have better quench which will help on that end. Good luck, and happy tire-frying to you!!

I didn't mention before, 440 Mopars came with forged cranks all the way mid way through 1973. Also the standard "LY" (i think) rods are capable of anything up to around 600 hp. The heavy duty 6pack rods are tough, but HEAVY. The forged cranks are really tough and very capable of a pounding. Not sure what your power/rpm goals are or your budget, but stock Mopar forged stuff is pretty sturdy. Just make sure you don't end up with a cast crank/balancer. They are OK, but I wouldn't run them in front of a 4-gear.
If you find a cast set of heads, be careful before putting $'s in them. Get a quote for all cleaning, magging, machining etc. and price out decent valvetrain parts. By the time you are done, you might be awful close to a set of decent assembled aluminum heads. The aluminum heads will tolerate at least 10.25:1 on a premium pump gas mopar and will take some weight off that beast.
Just food for thought........

I would use a 400 block as their physically smaller. larger bore than a 440.the webbing in the 230 block is like an aftermarket block while the 630 block should suffice. the 440 block is good for around 600 hp or so but has a much weaker webbing than a 72 to 74 400 which in my view necessitates a girdle as the 440 block is quite tall and has a tendancy to crack the main journal webbing. The 400s also make great strokers and will flat out smoke a 440 due to lighter internal weight, hope this helps, happy holidays all.
