Default Electric Shifter

This is a really stupid question, but I just bought a quarter stick with a shiftoid elect. shifter, when bolted together, the quarter stick doesn't have enough force to keep the spring loaded electric shifter pushed in. What am I doing wrong?

I guess I am jumping the gun a little, I don't have it wired yet. Will the solenoid stay back in the locked position when its wired? I have a MSD RPM switch that I am going to use. I don't have any instructions as I bought it new from a guy who lost the directions!

Default Wired

The solenoid must be wired and powered to keep the spring from pushing the shifter into the next gear.

Also remember depending on which one you have, when wiring it, the way mine works is it gives and takes away the ground not the hot side.
This seemed odd to me at first but I guess maybe it draws less amps or something?..

Default shifter

Yup just like Jody said. Mine WILL NOT stay in 1st if the solenoid isn't wired. Mine is set so the msd switch cuts the ground circuit and the spring shoves the shifter fwd. Mine is a Hurst Quarter stick. A friend of mines is a lot older and his is different. His the solenoid pushes the shifter fwd not the spring.

Just remember that when your electrical system is on either with a key switch or battery diss-connect that the solenoid will be energized and draw power. I wired mine through a switch and relay so that I could leave the battery diss-connect on without the solenoid drawing power and getting warm. They say it only draws 1 amp but still bugged me.
