Re: New NHRA 2008 helmet rule
Post by D6TD on Dec 8, 2007, 10:54am

I have included the exact wording (below) from the E.T. Section of the 2008 NHRA Rule Book. Please note that these new requirements are a direct result of serious injuries incurred by racers over the past couple of years. They also cross-over every NHRA class and not just E.T. classes.

These requirements also supplement a number of significant new protective clothing requirments (primarily for open-bodied cars). Items such as head-socks and a higher level driver suit will hopefully help to significantly reduce the number of serious injuries racers have been receiving.

Regardless of what you may think, the NHRA tech department does not change the rules without a lot of thought and debate. There are several Rules Committee levels which represent a wide range of interested parties (i.e. racers, track operators, tech officials, lawyers, etc.). All rules must pass each level with a majority in favor or the rule is not changed or made.

They also do not receive any "kick-backs" from manufacturers whenever new requirments are mandated. Driver safety is always the major factor HOWEVER cost to racers is also very important. In the case of helmets and protective clothing, everyone acknowledges that there will be an increased cost to racers, especially those that just purchased new equipment last year. However there are times when driver safety simply must take precedent and this is obviously one of those times.

Nearly every person associated with the tech department has been a drag racer at some level in the past and as such can fully relate to everyone's concerns. However, even if you feel your head is rock-hard or that there is nothing inside it worth protecting, we still feel it deserves protection and we are pretty sure that your wife, children, and other family members will agree.

Sincerely,

Dave Schaffel
NHRA Northwest Division
Technical Director

Like they say...if you have a $100 dollar head wear a $100 dollar helmet....but I still do not understand how a helmet that hasn't been in a crash can go bad...but oh well.

Scaned from the 2008 rule book 2/19/08.

The only difference i can see is that for S/G you need a full face helmet even in closed body cars, open body cars are both the same. See rules below.

It's the same as S/G down to 6.00 on helmets.

Zip.

Super Gas Helmet

Super Street Helmet
