NEED HELP WITH SBC BULID
I'M BUILDING A 388 SBC. ITS A 4 BOLT MAIN .010 BLOCK BORDED 60 OVER WITH AN EGALES ROTATING ASSEMBLY. MY NEXT SEP IS THE HEADS. I WAS THINKING ABOUT GOING WITH THE 18* HEADS. I KNOW THAT I WILL HAVE TO CHANGE PISTON WHICH IS OK. BUT I DON'T HAVE AN EXPERIENCE WITH THE 18* STUFF CAN SOMEONE PLEASE GIVE ME SOME INSIGHT. I'M LOOKING FOR 500-600 HP. IS THIS POSSIBLE OR SHOULD I GO ANOTHER ROUTE.

It's for sure possible with a 18* setup. I have a used 355" 18* shortblock assy. for sale here on RJ #1059801 that made 700 hp @ 7900. You can find 18* takeoffs on here and other sites for around 2k to 2.5k. If anyone wants a better look at the build/dyno sheets I'll fax or scan 'em, just PM me. You will need to run offset lifters and shaft rockers, except on some of the Brodix 18* stuff maybe? But to answer your question yes that kind of HP is done all the time. 8) JB

If 500-600 hp is all your after, I wouldn't even consider 18 degree stuff. Its all spendy and will require special intake, rockers, pushrods, headers, etc. A 215-220cc head with a moderate solid roller should do it easily....

If you want to make that power, as all have said don't waste the time or money on 18*. This is my list if I was building a 388 for power. The best value for the dollar is the Dart Pro 1 215 or 230 heads. 230's flow more, but may have more shrouding with the 2.08 vs the 2.05 valve on a 383. Under $1000 bare, with minor casting cleanup, port square and match, and a good competition valve job you will be on the way. Unless you already have stud rockers, use a sportsman series shaft rocker set, Jesel or T&D. Ferrea stainless valves hold up great and are a good choice and price, I've never had one fail. Buy good springs, PAC or PSI are the best. 2970 Super Victor and somewhere between 875 and 1000 CFM HP Holley or Demon, 800 if you are TS racing. Solid Roller with around [email protected] intake and about 10 more exhaust, .650 to .700 lift. 6000 stall
