I've bought some ngk # 8's for the car and have been running .045 gap
would going to a smaller gap like .040 help any?
496 bbc, 13 to 1, 722 lunati roller, 1050 dominator, 6al

Tighten up the gap to .030 Charles

.045 is alot of strain on that 6al box

WOW :shock: , I thought .o45 was alittle on the wide side but man I would have never considered .030. Thx I try that.

i tried running autolite race plug with the shorten ground starp with a 6al box and it kept putting the flame out had to go back to the regular autolites and gapped at .035..........the diffrence between the 2 plugs in my times were .17 i was amazed but the 6al box just doesn't have the power like some of the bigger boxs

i have a bbc runs on gas and alcohol only a 6-al box ( true pro-street car)...i run the gaps anywhere from .028 to .032 and have no problems with cutting out or flame blowing out...thats the reason for shortining up the gap...so the flame doesn;t have to travel so far..

when i ran my 383 Alcohol injected motor..i ran 0.16 never any more than .020..this was with a 7-al....
also ran a pro-mag 12 on a another bbc alochol injected motor with the same gap as my small block.

shorten her up i think you will be surprised...

i will bet its the answer to your breaking up in early rounds.... :P

I have a 6AL and cut my own plugs then gap them to .030

No issues as far as cutting out or getting enough spark.

Weird, over at team camaro i asked about this kind of question and they all said over there that .050 would be a good gap. I actually had them gapped at .035 and putting them at .050 cleaned up the motor nicely.

Weird how the same question is answered so different. Maybe its just me. I am going to go read it all again to see if i missed something.

i think the point that was being made is that the larger gap places more of a strain on the 6aL BOX..which opens the door for potential failure..No-one said it would not fire or work at .050 gap...but it plays hell on the 6al ignition/wires etc...

my opinion is if you opened your gap to .050 and it cleared up i would be looking for a little hotter plug and back down on my gap....you igintion will love you for it...


also what do you run for motor set up....

Its a 408 with flat top pistons and a 244/600 Roller cam, brodix track 1's. The problem is i need to use shorty plugs. I currently use Accell 414S plugs.
Got a better plug to use?
