if this is an automatic. i have seen this exact same problem and it is caused by the driveline failure or shock load from the diff breaking. the pump output that holds the direct drum sometimes will get a crack in it right behind the selectable thrust washer. it works when the fluid is cold but not when it heats up. pull the pump and check the area right behind the pump. also check the hardend race and the roller clutch on the direct drum. hope you find it. theres nothing worse than racecar gremlins.

ZIP- I dont believe driveshaft went forward because the welds on the rearend broke between the center and the tubes, the pinion was facing skyward, broke the 1350 ujoint, and yoke, and it looked like it pulled up and outward. It didnt pull out of the trans either. it did beat around the driveshaft hoop a little I didnt go far at all! please give me the damage possiblities any way !!!! Ive got to pull trans outany way, but would like to know where to start looking any way !!!!! thanks!!! big help!! David.

IF IT BANGED AROUND IN THE LOOP IT HAS A GREAT POSSIBILITY OF DAMAGING THE REAR OF THE TRANS!!!!--ALSO DOUBLE CHECK YOUR BRAKE LINES ALL THE WAY FOWARD[ THOSE FLEXIBLE HOSES GET KINKED AND THEY BECOME JUNK QUICKLY!!!] MY 2 CENTS---LIVELY
