Think of it as a poor man's forced induction.

If you have a 500 H.P. engine and you raise the carb inlet temp 100 deg you loose 50 H.P. thats why you don't want ANY under hood air in the carb.Bill

should you still run a air cleaner then? i was gonna run one of those bouble top air cleaners to help air get to the carb. well why not just bolt it between the intake and carb and seal the carb off from the engine bay?

They are very fuctional peice of equipment and they really do a good job of keeping hot air out of the carb.
cool air is denser, the air in your engine compartment is hot and nasty, bad bad bad, why do you think that people spend som much time and money trying to get that cold air into the engine?
cold air makes power. Believe me I'm building one for my camaro when its done.

Yes you should still run a cleaner. It's still sucking in the dirt and bugs and whatever along with that fresh cold air.
