Will a 10 bolt chevy hold 550 hp?
I have a 74 Camaro that weighs about 3300 lbs. We are building a SBC that should have 500 to 550 hp. Will our 10 bolt hold up,it is completely stock posi unit with 4:11 gears. How about if I go with after market axles and a spool? We dont drive it on the highway at all.

If you have the money I would do what Lively said but if not don't do what I did and run stock studs and the back tire pass you up. So maybe at a min. you can change them to a better stud and also I ran the # on what you gave and you are going to be around a 10.80 ET so I would be as safe as I could be.

a stock 10 bolt, no, will not hold up, the axles will snap . But there are guys over on the yellow bullet forums that use 10 bolts and do well with them. However, they do have all the good peices in them, spool, axles , gears...
I think at the speed that Wes told you , you will need at least a c-clip eliminator kit to hold the axle in once it snaps...
I still would recomend at the least a 12 bolt if you are going to spend money on good parts.
9" fords are very strong when done right, but are a little more expensive to build up.
A dana 60 is very strong, similar to a 12 bolt, but on steroids. that would be a good choice. May be hard to find as the chrysler guys all seem to hord these up, and 12 bolt housings are becomeing as easy to find as my glasses
However, strange does make new 9" and dana housings for a reasonable price.

I ran mine with stock axles down to 6.52 (1/8th) with a 1.37 sixty foot with a mini spool and richmound gears everything else stock, ran it like that all season in 05' no issue's. But I was afraid something would happen so I upgraded to the Strange 33 spline full spool axles and c-clip eliminators.
Maybe I just got lucky but when I took everything apart the only thing that showed wear was the mini-spool..and it is still running in my uncles truck..

I have a newly built Buick non C clip rearend for my car and it has all new parts including Moser 30 spline axles,Eaton 30 spline posi,Yukon 3.90 gears and new bearings. I had a great rearend builder do mine up and he has some rears in extremely fast cars. I believe the Ford 9 inch is strong, but you do lose a percentage of hp with them.I have seen too many C clip rears lose axles when left stock. Clip eliminators will take care of that. I suggest like the others to have at least good axles and eliminators as well as a good posi.I like the Buico,Olds,Pontiac rears as they have bolt in axles too.

ANOTHER ADVANTAGE OF THE 9" AND 8 3/4" IS YOU CAN CHANGE REAR RATIOS VERY EASY[ COMPARED TO THE ONES INSIDE THE HOUSING IF YOU CHANGE COMBINATIONS AT DIFFERENT CONDITIONS]---MY 2 CENTS WORTH AGAIN--LIVELY
