    Is a clutch style posi a good posi for the street? I might be getting a 9 inch 4.11 gears posi center section for $400 just rebuitl less then 100 miles on it. good deal??

    I think I know which one you are referring to (traction lock?), and it should be good for the street, but I would not put slicks on it. The one that I have comes apart under the ring gear. It has 2 or 3 counter sunk screws that holds the 2 halves together. The problem that I had when I ran the slicks was that shoulder on the pinion side of the carrier was too thin and it broke. I refitted another carrier half into it and put it in a street Mustang with a 428CJ and 4-speed and put over 20,000 miles on it.

    It was a weird one. The car quit pulling when I went to leave the starting line. We got it back to the trailer and was able to watch the driveshaft spin and yet it wouldn't pull the car. I figured that I had stripped all of the teeth off of the pinion gear. That week I took the rear apart and figured that I would be cleaning up bunches of teeth, but there wasn't a single chipped tooth and the wear pattern was good. I scratched my head for quite a while, until I unbolted the ring gear and the center section fell in two pieces. That is when I bought the spool for that car.

    The price doesn't sound too far out of line if it is in good shape. My guess is that it is the single rib case which I have seen them sell for about 50.00, a used 4.11 gear 50-100 depending on condition, a posi/limited slip carrier 150-200, bearings, seals, and having it set up.
