You're definately leaving something on the table with 1 5/8" headers I don't know if there's 3 tenths there. It depends on the cam and you could definately use more stall in the converter.
Below is a 388" motor i built in 2010, in this Camero it ran [email protected] with a toilet bowl and alcohol with 1 7/8" hesders. it ran awful good for about 50 passes until it broke a valve head and did a lot of damage, it had a 5500 stall converter. The car now has a 408" engine same cam, heads and toilet bowl. it ran 6.12 at Twin Cities here in La. in Oct. 2013. It weighs 3,000 lbs.
if you go to 1 3/4" or 1 7/8" you'll have 3 1/2 collectors, definately a plus
