Thanks for the replies. I did decide to remove the heads. Things do not look good. So, the engine is coming back out for tear down and inspection to find out what's going on.

Pix of cam sprocket

The gears are not plastic. They look to be quite heavy duty. In fact, the chain is bigger than the drive chain on my motorcycle. Looks to be plenty strong for my needs, so, provided they are not...

Your opinion on a 502 build please. Which heads?

I am upgrading the tried and true 427 big block in my 72 Nova. Just picked up a zz502 short block. I wish to retain the short block as-is with the exception of the cam, and want to go with a larger...

SBC: Is this a good block for my project?

Planning a 383. Found a std 350 block, casting #3970010. 010 and 020 casting numbers are also on the block. Supposedly it's a "high nickel block". At this point, max hp for my engine would be...

SBC Rod Length question

I'm planning a 383. A friend suggests going with a longer rod than the stock 5.7" for some 'free' horse power. My engine will be built for low end torque. What do you think?

Thanks!

Lets say you were able to get very good low rpm power out of such an engine. And you able to gear the car to cruise freeway at 60-65 in the 1800-2000 RPM range. Could you get a decent MPG? Maybe...
