What exactly are you looking for when you add/remove shims?
Just asking to make sure you're doing it right. Honestly, it's kind of a bad idea to shim it on an angle. |

Have you tried a diff starter? Is this a new one on a new engine? What was the old starter?

Good deal. Now just remember, they claim that their starter dogs don't have any deflection. So depending on how your starter is made, their tolerances may or may not work.
It is, however, at least a good starting point. |
New starter did not have old one

starter
Dont make it tougher than it is. You take a paper clip like the directions say on all starters.. Insert it between your two meshed gears and that is proper clearance.. Yes you may very well have to shim one side only.. totaly normal..
